The Checklist Manifesto « Atul Gawande 2010-02-01 (#)
-> book kiv 2010 "Gawande begins by making a distinction between errors of ignorance (mistakes we make because we don’t know enough), and errors of ineptitude (mistakes we made because we don’t make proper use of what we know). Failure in the modern world, he writes, is really about the second of these errors, and he walks us through a series of examples from medicine showing how the routine tasks of surgeons have now become so incredibly complicated that mistakes of one kind or another are virtually inevitable: it’s just too easy for an otherwise competent doctor to miss a step, or forget to ask a key question or, in the stress and pressure of the moment, to fail to plan properly for every eventuality."

cashto's blog : It's OK Not to Write Unit Tests 2009-11-05 (#)
-> programming kiv Let's be honest. Your tests mostly follow the “happy path”. Sure, on occasion you remember to test “the failure case”—the caller passed in null or a negative integer as an argument—mostly because you just got done writing that check and wouldn't it be a waste not to write a test to show how clever you were? Never mind that null or a negative argument is an assertable precondition that could never happen in production anyways.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to explain this to you [dive into mark] 2009-10-20 (#)
-> My Zen teacher once told me that, when people try to do you harm, you should thank them for giving you the opportunity to forgive them. In this case it’s even simpler, because there’s nothing to forgive, just explain. She’s redistributing the work that I explicitly made redistributable. She’s kind of the point. --- zen forgive forget kiv principle karma mark pilgrim

Rands In Repose: No Surprises (#)

It also contains constructive advice and insight regarding how your boss believes you can improve on that performance. My dream is that you already know all of this information because you’ve been getting year-round feedback from your boss. kiv performance management

-> Update & Saliva Warning: I took my iPhone in for a repair this week and was told my warranty was void because a small paper tab Apple implants in each iPhone showed the phone had been exposed to liquid. Since this phone has never gotten wet, we suspect that the moisture detector (which is just inside the dock port) was triggered by excess saliva from the kids playing Ocarina and Balloonimals, both of which involve blowing into the phone. If your kids are still at the drooly stage, you may want to avoid iPhone games that involve mouth-to-iPhone contact. iphone tip important
